Health should be one of your primary concerns. Eating the right food in the right amount is important, but choosing organic ingredients is also ideal. Organic food may cost a little bit more, but it is worth it. Read on to learn why.
1. No Herbicides or Pesticides
Alex Jones, a conspiracy theorist, claimed that atrazine, a widely used herbicide in the U.S. and Australia, turned frogs gay. He was widely maligned for that among other things, but when it came to atrazine, he was right. Scientists studied atrazine and found that within a month of exposure, 10% of male frogs turned into biological females.
While switching genders probably won’t happen to you, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry also found that atrazine caused liver, kidney, and heart damage in animals — and quite possibly in humans, too. Pesticides and herbicides contain large amounts of chemicals that people know of very little. But you don’t need to worry about all those chemicals if you use an organic ingredient.
2. They’re GMO-Free
The market is flooded with GMOs or genetically modified organisms. These include plants or animals that have their DNA altered by artificially integrating the DNA of another species. GMOs remain a mystery, but some significant alterations are built-in pesticides or a tolerance to specific pesticides. Very little testing has been done on these crops and the chemicals associated with them, but early findings show that the pesticides used in GM crops can cause a multitude of diseases and conditions.
3. More of the Good Stuff
Enough of what organic ingredients don’t have: What they do have is more flavor, more nutrients, and more antioxidants. Maybe it’s because of growing naturally on clean soil or the lack of chemicals. In fact, most people agree that organic food is a little bit tastier. Scientists have also found that organic crops have as much as 20-40 percent more antioxidants than non-organic crops.
Knowing what’s in the food you eat is an essential part of staying healthy. With organic ingredients, you can be sure that your food is safe from pesticides, herbicides, and other harmful chemicals.
