First Paralegal WorkJust because you survived four years in college studying law doesn’t mean things will be easier after that.

Similar to other complex industries, the legal profession is hard to break into. Law firms often prefer hiring those with experience, particularly for paralegals. That doesn’t mean, however, that you’ll be out of options.

Getting your first paralegal job is all about knowing the right people, organizations, and strategies. You will need to enroll in a national paralegal college and make the most of your time there to ensure better chances of succeeding after the legal course.

Power of Networks

Never underestimate the value of networking. In the legal profession and in other industries, it’s not just what you know but also who you know.

One way to get the most of this is to establish connections with fellow students, professors, and other people working in the industry. The goal when taking up legal studies is not only to learn, but to get experience, meet people, and make connections.

Internship with a Purpose

Most paralegal programs will require you to do an internship. This presents an opportunity where you can prove your worth, hone your skills, and acquire the necessary experience to make the transition from student to employee a smooth one.

Intern with a purpose and treat your internship like a real job, rather than just a school requirement. A good idea here is to seek an internship with a lawyer or firm that focuses on a practice area that you would like to focus on.

Strengths at Play

Ask not what a law firm can do for you, but what you can do for them. Paralegals are qualified to do much of the administrative and prep work that lawyers do, but at a lower billable rate. Playing your strengths and convincing an attorney or firm that you can improve their productivity with your work should be part of your game plan.

The goal is to make them see that hiring you will only mean good things.

The legal profession is tough, even for paralegals and legal assistants. But once you break into it, things are likely to get more fulfilling.
